Principal Economist, GD Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, European Commission, Brussels

Dr. Joachim Schwerin is Principal Economist in the unit responsible for SME access to finance within the Directorate-General Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs ("DG GROW") of the European Commission. He is in charge of designing policy measures that improve SME access to capital markets as well as alternative forms of finance, including crowdfunding. Moreover, he is developing the policy approach of DG GROW towards fintech and its applications for SMEs.

Before taking his current position, he was responsible for the coordination between industrial and competition policies on behalf of DG Enterprise and Industry. From the beginning of the financial crisis onwards until now, he has been closely involved in the design of the Commission's policy response, ranging from State aid policy towards the recently adopted Capital Markets Union Action Plan.

Dr. Schwerin is a PhD economist and was post doc research fellow at the London School of Economics before he joined the European Commission in 2001. The main fields of his academic work and publications have been innovation and growth; transition economics; competition policy; finance; law and institutional change as well as economic history.
